MAKES YOU GO HMMM!
Now that you have read Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, let’s
talk about some of the issues addressed. Grab your reading
friends and have fun.
- When, how, or what should Louise tell Herbert about the affair
with Sam? Should she have told him thirty years ago? How
would you have expected him to react back then versus now – same
or different? Would you want to know if it was your spouse? Would
knowing help or hurt the relationship?
- What was appropriate or inappropriate
about the relationship between Sylvia and Reese? Can a married man befriend a single
woman without presenting a problem for his wife? If so, how. If
not, why? Can a married woman befriend a single man and her
husband be okay with the relationship?
- Herbert referenced a secret
early in the prologue and recounted memories from the war prior to
his meeting with Latoya. What
do you think his secret was?
- What’s the difference between forgiving and forgetting? What
was Aunt Ida’s opinion? Do you agree?
- Denise is put in a tough
situation – having to divide Deon’s
estate with her parents fighting each step of the way. Should
she sell the townhouse to her father knowing his girlfriend will
most likely occupy the home with him or should she side with her
mother and not sell the place to him?
- Why did the words ‘daddy’s little girl’ bug
Sylvia so much?
- When did you realize Tony was the culprit and not Herbert?
- Denise
is angry at Tony and blames him for Deon’s death. What
will she gain by exposing Tony as a molester at the family event? What
other way might she deal with her anger and loss?
- Why and how should
Tony be forgiven by Sylvia? By
Herbert and Louise? By Denise? What would Jesus
do? How?
- Should Tony face criminal charges for his twenty five
year old transgression? In making the decision, what’s best
for the family? What’s best for Sylvia? Is what’s
best for Sylvia and the family the same regarding what happens
to Tony?
- Did Keisha (Arthur’s mistress) belong at Deon’s
funeral?
- The Reynolds family was a mixture of unity and dysfunction,
love and bitterness. In times of need they came together, and
at other times they drove one another crazy. What did you
like and dislike about their family?
- Reese and Angela have struggled
with issues surrounding their marriage. Is there any hope for them? What can they
do to make it work? What have they done right? Wrong?
- You
don’t know much about Deon, but based on what you do
know, do you think he committed suicide or was the overdose an
accident? Aunt Mabel implied that Deon was sick, although
no one else in the family acknowledged her comment. She also implied
that suicide was a more acceptable tragedy for the family than
having to deal with certain illnesses. How or what kind of
person would make such a distinction?
- Who’s your favorite character(s)? Excluding Tony, who’s
your least favorite? Who would you like to see in a sequel?
- How
would you describe the marriage between Arthur and Kay? What’s
the source of their underlying tension? What about the marriage
between Mabel and Sam? Both marriages had issues. Which would
you prefer: Arthur and Kay or Sam and Mabel (you have to pick one
- J)?
- How do you feel about Arthur? Sam? Lee? Do you consider
them to be strong or weak men? Why?
